Laurel Caverns Geological
Park, a 435 acre geological park featuring Pennsylvania's largest
cave.with 2.8 miles of passages. Laural Caverns is the 16th longest
developed cave in the United States. It is located just fifty miles
south of Pittsburgh, on Route 40, east of Uniontown. Rappelling,
spelunking and tours are available.
Nemacolin Castle
A landmark and focal point
of Brownsville Pennsylvania, one of the most historically important
towns in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Originally the location of Indian
burial grounds and fortifications, the area was the intended destination
of Chief Nemacolin when he guided the Cresap expeditions across the
mountains, establishing the Nemacolin Trail which later became the
approximate route of the National Road. The castle itself was the
historic mansion of the Bowman family, reflecting early life in America
from Colonial times to the late Victorian era.
Ohiopyle State Park
Located primarily in Fayette
County, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses about 19,052 acres of rugged
natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Mountains.
The focal point of the area is the more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny
[yaw-ki-gay-nee] River Gorge that passes through the heart of the
park.
