Gates Foundation Computer Lab

The computer lab consists of eleven computers and a dedicated printer funded by a grant from the Gates Foundation. The computer lab is used for training district and regional librarians as well as the general public on the use of computers, the Internet, and various Microsoft Office products.

When training sessions are not being conducted, patrons with valid library cards from any of the libraries in the district (i.e. Westmoreland & Fayette Counties), may use the computers during normal library operating hours.1

Technology protection measures including Internet filtering software and other technologies have been installed on library computers, and the library will enforce the operation of same during any use of those computers, to prevent minors from accessing visual depictions that are (1) obscene, (2) child pornography, or (3) harmful to minors. Technology protection measures may be disabled by a library staff member, as necessary, for bona fide research or other lawful purposes by people aged 17 and older.

Workstations in the lab are Gateway 600Mhz Pentiums with 128Mb of RAM and 17" monitors. Workstations are also equipped with sound cards and headphone extension cables. Patrons can bring in their own headphones, or "check out" a pair for use in the library.
