UPMC Shadyside's Hopwood Library: a Health Resource for Patients and Families, together with the University of Pittsburgh's Health Sciences Library System, develop and maintain this web site of Consumer Health Information (CHI). CHI encompasses information on health and medical topics directed towards patients and their families.

American Diabetes Association

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. The mission of the organization is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other services to people with diabetes, their families, health care professionals and the public. The Association is also actively involved in advocating for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes.

American Association of Kidney Patients

The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) exists to serve the needs, interests and welfare of all kidney patients and their families. Its mission is to improve the lives of fellow kidney patients and their families by helping them to deal with the physical, emotional and social impact of kidney disease. To accomplish these goals, AAKP engages in a variety of educational and supportive programs.

American Kidney Fund

The American Kidney Fund is a national voluntary health organization providing direct financial assistance for the benefit of kidney patients. It is supported by comprehensive educational programs, clinical research and community service projects.

National Kidney Foundation

The National Kidney Foundation, Inc., is a voluntary health organization, that seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

American Lung Association

The American Lung Association® (ALA) is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States, with a National Office and constituent and affiliate associations around the country. Founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis, ALA today fights lung disease in all its forms, with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. ALA is funded by contributions from the public, along with gifts and grants from corporations, foundations and government agencies. The United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Founded in 1887, the National Institutes of Health today is one of the world's foremost medical research centers, and the Federal focal point for medical research in the U.S. The NIH, comprised of 27 separate Institutes and Centers, is one of eight health agencies of the Public Health Service which, in turn, is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
